2019 brings an opportunity to reflect on your career and think about which direction you might want to go in the future. Creating new career resolutions and achieving them may feel easier said than done. However, by creating a career plan, setting yourself smart goals and using the GROW model you can plan and organise your career to achieve your Happy New Career in 2019.
Are you looking for a promotion? Do you want to take on more responsibilities? Are you considering a change in direction? Are you planning to work for yourself? Whatever your new career resolution, you need to be clear on where you are now and what your GOAL is to help you plan to get to where you want to be.
The GROW model will help you to create a clear career strategy. The model was originally developed in the 1980s by business coaches Graham Alexander, Alan Fine, and Sir John Whitmore.
GROW = GOAL - REALITY - OPTIONS - WAY FORWARD
GOAL
Firstly you need to decide where you are going (the goal) Look to the future and visual yourself achieving that goal. What will it look like, feel like, sound like when you are there?
REALITY
This is the part of the model which determines if the goal is realistic. Ask yourself - is your goal realistic?
OPTIONS
You then need to explore how you are going to achieve your goal, what are your options? What actions do you need to take?
WAY FORWARD
This is your opportunity to establish what your actions will be to determine the way forward with your goal.
Choose a goal that matters to you and don’t be deterred by any challenges you face along the way. Be confident in your own ability and be flexible if you need to change any aspects of your goal.
