LinkedIn is a vital networking platform for everyone but can be particularly useful for professionals looking to work for themselves. Not only does using the platform increase your chances of finding work, but it also provides the opportunity to connect with your target audience, keep up to date with market trends, join groups and promote your brand online. It is important to optimise your profile for client growth and lead generation by proactively using LinkedIn to ensure you are sourcing opportunities effectively.

Here are 5 profile hints and tips to optimise your LinkedIn profile if you are self-employed:

  • Headline – Your LinkedIn headline is a vital part of your online brand. Your headline is visible when you send a request and appears in search engines next to your name. Build brand awareness and list the terms in your headline that you predict your target audience will be searching on. Use this section to demonstrate what you want to be known for in the market, detailing who you are and what you do.
  • About - This is one of the most underutilised areas on LinkedIn. It is your opportunity to provide a breakdown of your offering and the solutions you can provide your clients. Tailor your ‘About’ section in line with your target market.

Make sure you define:

  • Who you are?
  • What you do?
  • What sets you apart?
  • Who you help?

Conclude with a call to action and signpost the reader to any further reading and the best way for them to get in touch.

  • ‘Feature’ your content

Show prospective clients that you know your ‘stuff’ - connect with your audience by showcasing your own content and saving it to ‘Featured’.

This section allows you to add your created articles, brochures, or marketing collateral to your profile so you can showcase your work and demonstrate credibility in your industry. It is a great part of the profile to define your personal brand and attract clients and customers. Don’t forget to optimise your posting strategy, with 9am to 11am on weekdays being the best time to post.

  • Experience - Self-employment has a recognised category in the ‘experience’ section of your LinkedIn profile. You can now choose from ‘Contract’, ‘Freelance’ or ‘Self -employed’. Consider creating a LinkedIn Company Page for your business so you can redirect site traffic through to a business LinkedIn page. This will allow prospective clients to learn more about your brand, products and services. If you are hoping to message LinkedIn members as an organisation you will need to establish a LinkedIn Company page.
  • Skills & Endorsements - Identify which keywords relate to the services you are offering and list them in your skills and expertise. Think about the keywords that people would search for if they needed someone with your skillset. Make sure you pin your top 3 skills and group them together at the top of the section.
