In a competitive job market, it’s more important than ever for jobseekers to stay informed and vigilant. Unfortunately, Job scams are on the rise and it’s something we are hearing more about in a digital job market.

According to Action Fraud, recruitment fraud has more than doubled in the UK, rising from 2,094 cases in 2022 to over 4,800 in 2024. The BBC reports that fraudsters are frequently using fake job adverts to steal money and personal information. BBC.

The NatWest Cyber Helpline also reported a 286% increase in job scams within a nine month period in 2024. NatWest

Job Scams often involve fake interviews, convincing websites and realistic recruitment processes designed to build trust before money or data is taken and warning signs to look out for include, being asked for upfront fees, communication feels rushed and interctions taking place via messaging apps.

Here are 6 practical tips to help protect yourself during your job search. Please feel free to save and share:

Tip 1 - Research the Employer and check:

  • Official website
  • Companies House Registration
  • LinkedIn page & Social Media Accounts
  • Online reviews

Tip 2 - Review Communication and look out for:

  • Unusual email addresses
  • Poor spelling/grammar
  • Only using messaging apps

Tip 3 - Don’t Pay to Apply

  • Jobseekers should never pay recruiters.
  • Recruitment fees are paid by employers not candidates.
  • Any request for payment is a major red flag.

Tip 4 - Be Cautious Sharing Personal Data Including:

  • Bank details
  • Passport or Forms of ID
  • NI number

Tip 5 - Ask for a Contract - Legitimate Employers Will:

  • Give you time to consider
  • Answer questions
  • Provide a contract
