newspaper job searchEmployers recruit temps for a number of different reasons. It may be down to a need for more staff to cover seasonal peaks and boost productivity at busy times, or to cover staff absence or leave. For those that are currently unemployed, the thought of temping may not fulfil you with the same sense of excitement as landing a permanent role. However, it can be a great solution for those in the midst of a long job search. While temping may not be something you might see yourself doing long term, it can be a rewarding and constructive way to bridge the gap between roles, transition between studying and full-time work or to gain exposure to other industries if you are considering a change in your career.

Here are just some of the many positives about temping during your search:

1. Temporary work will keep you remunerated

Job seekers choose to temp whilst they are looking for a permanent job to take the financial pressure off throughout their job search. Looking for and interviewing for permanent jobs can be time consuming and many people avoid the need to take a job for the sake of it by temping, giving you the time to find a job you really want with a company you really like.

2. Its more flexible than you think

One of the biggest benefits why people choose to temp is down to flexibility. As long as you're up front from the start, temping agencies and employers will usually allow you to fit your work around interviews and your other commitments. You'll also have a direct say in when and how you want to work, there's no obligation to commit to a permanent role that doesn't suit you, making it easier to leave if there are other opportunities you want to explore.

3. It looks good on your CV

Temporary work can bridge gaps on your CV and employers will look favourably on your desire to get out there and earn a living. Even if the work you're doing is a departure from your desired role, a willingness to roll up your sleeves will earn you a sizeable chunk of respect with potential hirers.

4. You'll gain new experiences

The transient nature of the temping world means you'll likely get exposure to a variety of different roles within a short space of time. This can be a great way to add a few new strings to your bow, and it can also be ground for career inspiration whether you're mid-career or just starting out in your professional life.

5. … and contacts

As you pass through different offices and departments you'll find yourself working closely with people from various walks of life. It's an opportunity to observe different working styles and pick up useful tips, and you may well develop contacts for your job search and for your later career.

Whilst your job search rightly remains at the top of your list of priorities, you may find temporary work will help you to make new contacts and keep your skills current whilst seeking that ideal role.
