The process of making redundancies or restructuring a team can place a significant strain not only on the individuals impacted, but also upon those who […]

Back in 2015, renowned futurist Rohit Talwar offered a compelling (albeit somewhat bleak) vision of the future world of work. Talwar predicted that a perfect storm of increased levels of workplace automation, digital transformation, and advances in medical science would create a growing population of employees approaching the latter stages of their careers without available and realistic employment opportunities. Now, a decade later in 2025, his predictions have massively materialised. With many people facing the reality of working well into their late 60s or, in some cases 70s, to sustain their retirement, the modern labour market still presents complex and uncomfortable challenges for both employers and employees.
The issues remain both fundamental and chronic. For employees in traditional ‘blue collar’ sectors, the idea of prolonging their career is often unrealistic and unappealing at that stage of life. Many know they need to stay in employment longer but lack a clear plan or awareness of where their transferable skills could be redeployed in a rapidly changing economy. Others find themselves facing later-life financial insecurity, lacking both the resources and access to expert guidance needed to plan for a sustainable future.
Those in the latter stages of their careers who experience redundancy face not only the financial strain of job loss but also the psychological shift from structured employment to a disrupted daily routine. Maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing, alongside a sense of purpose and contribution, has become essential for those entering this stage of their career. The issue is that many lack the tools, knowledge, or even the confidence to navigate and fully understand this new stage of life effectively.
Meanwhile, across developed economies, middle-aged professionals are increasingly at risk of being displaced from their role due to the rapid rise of AI, automation and digital-first business models and in many industries, like Tech and Finance, roles are being redefined or replaced. Alongside this, organisations are often looking for a younger and more tech savvy employee pool who are both cheaper and for whom an understanding and utilisation of technology is more intuitive. To compound matters, this trend shows little sign of abating with automation on the increase and the age at which employees become obsolescent, getting lower.
For employers, the challenges are equally as complex. Organisations must balance the need to futureproof their workforce with the responsibility to support their experienced employees through transition. How can younger talent thrive without feeling the need to look elsewhere to fulfil their career goals? How does a modern business manage the complex challenge of intergenerational workforces with differing expectations and needs? All these questions are difficult to answer.
